Diabetes Introduction

Diabetes is the fastest growing epidemic health problem with huge social, health, and financial consequences. It affects almost 350 million people worldwide and it is still growing exponentially in the absence of better control or cure.

In 2012, diabetes was the direct cause of some 1.5 million deaths, with more than 80% of them take place in low- and middle-income nations. World Health Organization (WHO) projects that diabetes will be the 7th major cause of death by 2030.

An ageing population, obesity and lack of knowledge are the three major culprits for the increase. Furthermore it has been shown that almost 50% of the supposed diabetics are not diagnosed until 10 years after the onset of the disease. Therefore,  the real prevalence of global diabetes is astronomically high year after year.

Over time, chronic exposure to high blood sugars can wreak havoc on every major organ system in the body, causing  kidney failure, heart attacks, strokes, visual loss or blindness, impotence in men and infections that can lead to amputations.

There are four common types of diabetes: type 1 diabetes, type 2, type 3 diabetes and gestational diabetes.

This page introduces  the history of diabetes, the types of diabetes, signs and symptoms, treatments, complications and possibly ways to reverse it naturally.
